2026 ABSENTEE VOTING DEADLINES

ABSENTEE VOTING ELIGIBILITY

A voter may cast an absentee ballot if he or she:

• EXPECTS TO BE ABSENT FROM THE COUNTY on Election Day
• IS ILL OR HAS A PHYSICAL DISABILITY/INFIRMITY that prevents the voter from being able to access their assigned polling place
• IS A REGISTERED ALABAMA VOTER LIVING OUTSIDE THE COUNTY, such as a member of the armed forces or a spouse or dependent of such person, a voter residing outside the United States, a college student at an educational institution located outside their county residence 
• IS AN APPOINTED ELECTION OFFICER OR POLL WATCHER at a polling place other than his or her regular polling place
• EXPECTS TO WORK A REQUIRED SHIFT, which has at least 10 hours or more that coincides with regular polling hours
• IS A CAREGIVER for a family member to the second degree of kinship by affinity or consanguinity and the family member is confined to his or her home
• IS CURRENTLY INCARCERATED in prison or jail and has not been convicted of a felony involving moral turpitude

APPLYING FOR AN ABSENTEE BALLOT

To apply for an absentee ballot, the voter must submit an Absentee Ballot Application to the Absentee Election Manager by mail or hand delivery. The Absentee Ballot Application must be received by the Absentee Election Manager no later than the seventh day prior to the election; or hand delivered by the voter no later than the fifth day prior to the election.

RETURNING ABSENTEE BALLOT

Once your application is approved, the Absentee Election Manager will mail absentee ballot or personally hand the absentee ballot to the voter. The absentee ballot package will contain the necessary supplies for the voter to return the ballot.

The voter is required to use one of the following ways to return the absentee ballot to the Absentee Election Manager:

• Forward by U.S. Mail
• Forward by commercial carrier
• Personally hand-deliver

Absentee Ballots may be HAND-DELIVERED to the Absentee Election Manager by the voter by 5:00 p.m. the day before the election. Ballots cannot be hand delivered by anyone other than the voter.

Absentee Ballots returned by MAIL must be received by Noon on Election Day.

WITNESSING REQUIREMENTS: An absentee ballot cannot be counted unless the AFFIDAVIT (included in package) is notarized or has the signatures of two witnesses who are 18 years old or older. Electronic or remote notarization of absentee ballot affidavits is not allowed.
